Like many, I’ve had a hard time this year when people ask, “How are you doing?” Nobody is really thriving in 2020, so it’s kind of an awkward question in the first place. And for me, the answer gets a little more complicated.

I hate to complain, so I usually say something like, “Doing as well as any of us can right now!” It’s an honest answer, even if it leaves out plenty of holes.

The reality: I got sick in March.

I got better, kind of.

But I’m still not recovered.

We all grieve in different ways. For me, the written word offers solace unlike anything else. These are my thoughts — and mine alone — as I mourn the loss of more people due to guns, hate, and fear.

Hate pours from my soul, pulsing venom through my veins and escaping, slowly, like sap oozing out my pores. I bleed, but the crimson stains aren’t mine to claim. So I pretend this day feels as monotonous as the last, until a whisper escapes from my throat as I remember their names. Jerald. Angel. Antonio. Amanda.

As 2014 comes to an end, our news feeds are filling up with year-end lists. “Best Restaurants,” “Most Iconic Photos,” “Top Stories,” “Epic Fails,” etc. As a good sheep, I’m following the herd and writing one of my own.
